With a population of around 15,000 people, Anguilla is one of the most thinly populated countries in the world. It’s also one of the most affluent, with a GDP per capita of more than $40,000 (the highest in the Caribbean). The main industry in Anguilla is tourism; visitors come to enjoy its white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. The territory was first settled by the Arawak people at least 3,000 years ago. It is part of the Lesser Antilles, formed from the remnants of a volcanic island chain that once stretched from Central America to South America.

In 1502, Spanish explorers discovered Anguilla and called it “San Miguel”. The island was named after Saint Michael the Archangel. Anguilla is considered to be one of the most pristine islands in the Caribbean, with a tropical climate and turquoise waters. The earliest known inhabitants of the island were the Arawak people, possibly coming from South America. The Spanish were the first Europeans to arrive on the island; they called the island “Isla de San Miguel” after St. Michael the Archangel.
